There are a lot of available food options for vegan food at the grocery store that is both economical and fairly nutritious. In comparison to 2010, the 2026 variety of vegan food selections is varied, includes various name brands, and includes a long term plan to consider it make it a permanent and long term diet.
Biscoff - Lotus XL 10 Pack, Airline Size or 8.8 oz 32 pack. Some of the varieties have not been officially been confirmed vegan and it will be listed on the stores website. Many stores now list "vegan" in an item description along with gluten free and other item designators.
Coca-Cola continues to be vegan, but not the juices, they now offer coke zero and caffeine free coke.
Canada Dry appears to be vegan, its mostly carbonated water and ginger.
Dr. Pepper - Except for the natural sugar variety, all other flavors use vegan friendly sugars and sweeteners.
Takis - Fuego, Habanero, and Spicy Sweet Chili. Blue-Heat is mostly vegan but may be cross contaminated with other Takis flavors.
Nissin - Top Ramen Soy or Chili Flavor. Everything including the flavor packet is vegan. Unfortunately, many stores don't carry these anymore but they can normally be ordered from the stores website. They will ship them directly to you.
Maruchan - Top Ramen. Only the Noodles are vegan but none of the packets including soy or chili are vegan.
Tostitos - Original restaurant style, lightly salted, hint of lime, black bean and garlic, simply organic blue corn, and Scoops!, other flavors are not guaranteed to be vegan. Salsa and plain tomato are also typically vegan.
Skippy - peanut butter, but not the pb bites. This was announced in 2023.
Ragu Pasta Sauce - 14 out 18 sauces are vegan, and the brand is becoming vegan friendly.
Prego Pasta Sauce - Most of the classic tomato based sauces. This includes traditional, roasted garlic and herb, and fresh mushroom*.
Barilla Pasta - Classic dried pasta and the Protein plus is from legumes and grains*
Cheerios - the original ones only. Read the ingredients and write the manufacturer, please don't send to many letters or emails.
White Mushrooms* - in blue box, these are generally grown in plant based soil. Other varieties have names that identify it as possibly unsafe for vegans.
Old Orchard Juice Concentrate - orange juice, orange juice blend, and cranberry blend.
Country Crock - now has a vegan butter.
Malt-O-Meal - The original hot cereal. Also surprisingly the bagged cold cereal such as Apple Zings, Fruity Dyno Bytes, Cinnamon Toasters, and Berry Colossal Crunch. The company recommends to always check the label and they have a list of cereals that are definitely not vegan. Besides, the ingredients, Malt-O-Meal checks the soil for things that may not be vegan when answering this question. The original hot cereal contains a recipe for magic muffins that can have the milk replaced with almond milk. It would still require an egg substitute to complete the recipe for vegan magic muffins.
Sunny D - This is nutritionally vegan but yellow #6 has a history which is being phased out by 2026.
Many food manufacturers are catering to vegans but their equipment may initially process both vegan and none vegan foods to determine if there is an interest. These foods are initially better suited for those transitioning to a vegan diet. Always read the label, even if a food is labeled and marketed as vegan, double check the ingredient list for your area. Not all foods have the circled v or the word vegan and many new products are listed only on the website as being vegan. With enough interest, a food manufacturer may decide to use dedicated equipment for their vegan foods but this is not something they initially commit to, its something they announce later when they decide to do so.
Many food manufacturers are replacing ingredients with plant based alternatives first. This means that if a product is assumed to be vegan by glancing at the package, it will most likely be vegan in the short or near future. This is not a guarantee but a goal. For example tomato sauces, wheat cereals, tortilla chips, corn chips etc.
Kellogs Corn Flakes, Rice Crispies, Chex, Sanitas Corn Tortilla Chips. This may change with time but if they have a dedicated market, its better to be aware that certain items are not vegan from specific manufacturers.
*Mushrooms - These are not considered a plant but many vegans consider them edible. Stick to the white mushrooms if possible and think through the meaning of words in the mushroom name. They would most likely not meet the guidelines of kosher or halal and would have to be inspected on their growth and nutrition process. They essentially feed on decay but growing them in plant based nutrient would potentially make them vegan. This is an ongoing debate.
Better Goods Sorbet - strawberry lemon or mango pineapple.
Better Goods Ice Cream - Vanilla, Salted Caramel, and Mint Chocolate Chip. Made from Oatmilk.
Goodie Girl - Double stuffed chocolate creme cookie
Back to Nature - Classic sandwich creme cookie
Dandies, Good Mallow, or Yummallo. These are vegan marshmallows and there are several other brands. Yummallo has a vegan marshmallow cereal and dehydrated marshmallows.
Talenti - Dairy free sorbetto - Rasperry or Mango
Larabar - Over 6 different flavors - great for hiking
Kashi Go - Chocolate or Peanut Butter only
South Mills Mushrooms - grown with vegan friendly food process.
Siete Lime Chips - these are good and taste different due to the ingredients.
Siete Shortbread Cookies - a good choice for a quick snack.
Rip Van Wafers - various varieties like strawberry and vanilla
Violife Mexican Shreds or Mozzarella, recently released cream cheese and sour cream.
Eggs from Plants - bean based
Some of the products may taste synthetic or lead to an upset stomach this is very minimal such as overeating Country Crock or overheating Violife in the Microwave. Taste test Kashi Go and Van Rip Wafers first before buying a large quantity.
Violife Mexican Shreds works better by mixing into hot rice and beans. Heating it up in the microwave can lead to undesired results and flavors. These are fairly new, it tastes good when done right.
Morning Star was one of the only vegan friendly frozen burgers found in the store not too long ago. The burger contained egg and was made from mostly plants. Today both Morning Star and Gardein along with Tofurkey provide a wide variety of plant based proteins. My advice is to buy $40 to $100 worth of different vegan proteins to mix with pastas, salads, beans, or to put in sandwiches, flat bread like pita or naan is generally vegan. A list of vegan breads should be updated shortly, mostly looking for eggs and milk.
A lot of plant based proteins are made from rice, corn, wheat, lentils, and beans. While nuts contain protein, they are often excluded from plant based proteins to be more inclusive of people with food allergies. Nut prices have also come down recently to more reasonable levels.
B-12 is a vitamin that vegans are missing, it is probably just fine. Doctors state that it helps with blood cell formation and with DNA synthesis. It is only found in none plant based sources. Adaptation and evolution has taught us that when switching to plant based diets our bodies stop producing certain enzymes that break down foods that are no longer eaten. Blood cells are also made from sugar and they feed on glucose, there are variety of vegan friendly sugars that would help with blood cell production. Iron, is normally a mineral that is found in oxidized metals. While this may help with anemia, a concern with lack of B-12, it would likely also fall under synthesized foods because it is a metal.
Any vegan B-12 vitamins are misleading. They are "meant for vegans" but are not made with plant based ingredients. Vegan food doctors and nutritionists are now working with pediatricians and general physicians to review lab work and to discuss the molecular composition of human edible food ingredients as well as the processes in dna synthesis. It is unlikely that vegans need B-12, the human body will likely adjust, in 2012 it was uncertain what B-12 was for but it was identified as an ingredient lacking from vegan diets.
Most of these are vegan because additives have now been removed in favor of plant based alternatives or their natural minimally processed states. Chemicals are generally considered vegan, conversation on synthetic foods, and some do derive from plants, although they are likely molecularized in labs and generated from that molecular composition and defined structure.
Hersheys 100% powdered cacao, flour, maple syrup, corn syrup, baking powder, baking soda, vinegar, vegetable oil, corn oil, tofu, coconut flakes, vanilla extract, rice, beans, pasta, corn, San Francisco Bay Decaf Coffee or Kicking Horse Decaf, rice, Italian dressing, most of the produce section, corn syrup, flax, most spices, oatmeal, Zulka, Sugar in the Raw, most brown sugar, acai powder, GV Thai Style Sweet Chili Sauce (potassium), almond milk, soy milk, walnut milk, oatmilk. The list is pretty extensive and it is becoming easier to keep the kitchen stocked with only vegan foods.
This is considered a major update to vegan diets and those that are interested in changing to a plant based diet have an opportunity to participate very easily. There are way too many foods and name brands to list now, so each person will have to keep track of their own brands that they like and reach out to friends and family about foods they are looking for that are not yet vegan or have not been presented as a vegan food option yet.
Nutritional vegan or ethical vegan. Most vegans are going for nutrition at the moment meaning they are willing to buy from a company that does also sell non plant based products. The preference is to focus on plant based only businesses but most people wouldn't have enough food to eat or clothes to wear if they did so. Bonus: Looking for a vegan body wash? Try Dr. Teals, Dove also has a plant based body wash and deodorant and various plant based shampoos are being examined by vegans.
