Micro and Macro Biological Models

Modeling human biology and the similarities with other lifeforms that originate on Earth can be a complex task if there is no initial starting point.

On a micro level there are systems built on top of systems such as cells, molecules, atoms, and ions. These form larger systems such as the sensory transmission system, the neurological response system, the respiratory system, and the circulatory system.

There are various systems that can be studied at a normal visual perception level such as the skeletal system, the tissue system, the nutrition distribution system, the auditory system, and the visual perception system.

These systems can be micro inspected but symptoms such as improper skeletal alignment, fractures, inflammation, muscle texture, loss of hearing, and visual misperceptions can be inspected without instruments or with very minimal amount of tools.

On a macro level, the human species can be examined through concepts such as epidemiology or statistical analysis of ailments. This macro examination of the human system views each individual as a component to the human species which is a system to the overall Earth system. Here begins the study of life or bio/o/logy.

When reviewing magnification, observations can be viewed presented at a distance in very fine detail or very closely as big as an elephant in front of the face. Small models allow much more observation of interactions throughout a system and large models allow examination of specific components within a system. Micro is often more in a smaller space and macro is often a bigger examination area but with a smaller quantity.

Things can get confusing when examining a species which is often a macro examination of a large system. Unless its from the moon, then it might be a micro observation, at distance, in the context of a galaxy or the entire universe.

Micro and macro have their context. Small and big models are both useful for various goals, selecting the correct model will depend on the theories, hypothesis, goals, and expected results. Those are concepts for another post; evaluation of theories, and examination of hypothesis.
