Edge cases are normally extreme deviation from the averages and medians in a data set.
What this means is that in a case where the scale is set at 1 to 100 and the average data point is 50 or 60 then 90 or 20 might be an extreme deviation from the normal representation of data or the norm, which is often a majority vote in modern governance and documentation of societal norms and behaviors.
In a traditional sense, inclusion of common laws in legislative processes is a normal part of human development.
While this post is about edge cases, its worth noting that most laws are based on commonly acceptable behaviors and some administrative parameters regarding gene expression in future gene pools. This means majority based behavioral norms are common law, for the most part; they can be contested in court but requires a hearing before a competent tribunal and in the United States, availability of assistance of counsel, quick trials, and a requirement of following established due process by the courts, their officers, hearing officers, and any required or obligated court participants.
Data is often used for much more than documenting common law, establishing behavioral norm statistics, or voting; which will be a common theme with social media: freedom of expression, right to publish or communicate information; within reason and without violating others rights including privacy or economic rights; and freedoms of the press which usually means right to publish legally obtained and properly licensed data, or to provided data to the government for examination in right to publish and inform the public.
Some example uses of data which most often looks at averages, norms, medians, and means are things like medical statistics, learning effectiveness, job role performance, personal budget requirements, area revenues and incomes, and cost of basic neccesities that the government is obligated to make easily available if its feasible to use resources for reducing complexity and difficulty in obtaining and participating in life sustaining processes such as economic activity and resource purchasing in developed nations.
Various forms of data analysis can get complex and quite verbose in grammar, vocabulary, and terminology used to examine and analyse data. Often a goal with data examination is simplification of concepts so that more people can understand the concepts and participate in processes related to those concepts without having to become an expert in that area of available human knowledge. There is also economic rights in examination and publishing data which serves as an incentive for the advancement of the sciences and arts.
While the majority of data examination occurs with means, averages, norms, and medians; its important to look at edge cases and discover why they occur as this might lead to additional areas of study, document an area of life or society that is going out of usage, or in decline, or is soon to be trending, often times increasing in usage or prevalency.
Edge cases can help with documenting minority rights, meaning their behaviors deviate from the norm or are not representative of the majority but are not illegal and might be covered by ex post facto law in the future.
They might also document extremely poor or extremely rich medical practices or health behaviors, as well as extremely proficient or extremely inefficient learning patterns or algorithms constructed by the human brain, and job training completion rates that have been established by different demographics or work groups.
Overall, edge cases might highlight different data that can either be examined, analysed, assessed for future requirements, or ignored. Its ok for edge case data to be there solely as an indicator as to how far edges deviate from the norm or to discuss data points regarding which way society or civilization wants to evolve based on an average of majority behaviors.
