A determining factor on whether a potential couple decides to be together or to remain friends is the level of attraction to each other. This is often a multi-factor assessment that includes cognitive compatibility, emotional similarities, social perceptions, and physical attraction.
A persons perceived social environment may influence the desireability of a potential mate.
The human gene pool has gone through some changes overtime that shape the way humans evolve, survive, and make friends with each other. Changes to a gene pool are estimated on a trajectory and are very difficult to plan for. They can be documented, studied, and decided on. Someone that is observing certain patterns in human development can decide to participate, stay the same, or wait until further data is available.
One of the most recent developments is age gap dating. Meaning that people are dating others with more than a 5 year age difference. This used to be a taboo, much like various sexual fetishes that are not mainstream or readily accepted. While some of these desires can result in birth defects, a lot of them are not necessarily for the purpose of starting a family even if that is an assessment and consideration for doctors.
The most recent age gap dating is approximately for people between 20 and 60 years old with teenagers wondering how this will affect them over their lifetime. Starting with a graph of female ages and their desired or accepted age range for a partner, the data may look like this as a brief overview.
Technically, people over 18 years old do not have a legal upper age limit for a boyfriend or girlfriend. Realistically, a person in their twenties might be attracted to someone in their thirties but traditionally there is a stigma that is no longer there. In the past, a potential couple may have hesitated to date, even if they are attracted to each other because of their age range. More recently, they don't really care and view it as a personal choice that is not for other people to make even if their input or opinion may be valued.
The reason this is important for teenagers is because there is a one way age difference at certain stages. Imagine a 16 year old and a 24 year old, kissing on a parkbench or sofa. Now imagine a 16 year old making out with an 8 year old. Next scenary, a 19 year old is going dancing with a date that is 35 years old. Now imagine a 19 year old having a playdate with a 3 year old. While it may look cute, there are certain boundaries that should normally not be crossed. Those are longer conversations but generally, 12 is an acceptable age for dating a teenager that will vary between 14 and 17 depending on the family and community.
Age gap dating is viewed as introducing genetic diversity into the human gene group and same age dating is viewed as reducing or concentrating specific genes in the human species.
Most places that do not have a same age dating rule, pick a potential relationship partner based on a few parameters:
Age is rarely a factor of consideration and people are permissive on age if all other factors are compatible or a good to excellent match. This helps the gene pool on a long term trajectory when thinking about other organisms or animals humans may encounter on Earth over a long period of time.
Factors of consideration may sometimes specify a specific parameter if that is something that has not been explored or is overly focused on, perhaps a theme, in selecting a potential partner.
Documenting how humans breed and select partners can help with establishing a long term relationship that is representative of the overall gene pool. However, edge cases do exist in nearly every gene pool. The decisions we make today may not change for over 100 years. These changes just started happening within the last 15 years or so and are viewed as most likely, long term.
